How to describe this movie? It is a feel good explosion of colour, music and dance two hours long. The last of Demy's medium-sized cities trilogy (after "Lola" and the highly experimental and sentimental palm d'or winner "Les Parapluis de Cherburg") it will give you a feeling of happiness throughout and long after it, without a single easy laugh . The plot is more like a shakesperian comedy of errors, centred around the main public square of Rochefort during a three day weekend festival. The Dorleac/Deneuve sisters, Gene Kelly and George Chakiris sing and dance their heart out to the most inspired (almost continuous) score by Michel Legrand, the delicate direction of Demy and a colourful cinematography. What is left to say? Probably the greatest ending in film history, not because of what it shows, but because of what it does not show. Demy skilfully avoids a predictable and unnecessary scene, so typical of Hollywood, and leaves the movie where it should be, amidst the realm of dream and fantasy. Watch it, you will not regret it, and certainly never forget it. No other movie will ever lift your spirits so high. I guarantee it.
